TRIPLE MEDALLION KAZAK, Southeast Caucasian
5ft 3in x 8ft 7in
3rd Quarter, 19th Century
Woven by pastoral nomads who lived in the upper reaches of the rugged Caucasus Mountains, this dynamic 150-year-old Kazak rug excels in its masterful dye work, with exotic tones of persimmon, aubergine, cerulean and powder blue, skillfully abrashed with purposeful color striations to create great visual depth. A dramatic change to significantly lighter hues in the upper border has the important artistic function of opening rather than constricting the composition as a whole. Intentional irregularities abound in the graphic 19th century tribal carpet pattern language. Of great interest to aficionados of Caucasian rugs, its ascending medallions are all different in size, shape and detailing, which infuses tremendous energy into the composition, while maintaining an overall harmony. The spontaneity in the smaller motifs give the sense they are forever floating in space. This one-of-a-kind tribal rug has been lovingly cared for throughout its service and remains in extraordinarily good condition with heavier to medium pile overall. (From THE YEREVAN, ARMENIA CACHE.)
