KARACHOV KAZAK, Southern Central Caucasian
3' 8" x 9' 0"
(Decorative) This intensely graphic, early 20th century Caucasian rug draws the eye to its rendition of the traditional “Karachov” design of a row of overscale octagonal medallions and emphasizes the drama by enclosing them with a tiny checkerboard design. Although the weaver wove in a date of 1895, the rug appears to have been woven in the 1920s, and thus she may have taken her inspiration from a preexisting rug. Happily, this joyful incredibly personal Kazak comes to us in heavy pile condition, as it had long been used as a wall hanging.
