KAZAK RUNNER, Southern Central Caucasian
3' 5" x 9' 10"
(Connoisseur-Caliber) This is a textbook example of a great Kazak: it has abundant animals, continual color change, and the grand tribal medallions. Yet, what is most extraordinary in this piece is the brilliant saffron yellow ground especially in combination with the unexpected ivory borders (in lieu of traditional red or blue). This rug's one-of-a-kind color combination contributes greatly to its collectible value. The large knotted pile of the mountainous Kazak region gives it an appealing texture that is perfectly consonant with the rug's origins as a spontaneous folk art weaving. Dating from 1875, it is still in very good condition suitable for floor use, and would make for a joyful daily encounter in a hallway, especially as discovered for the first time by guests!
