HERIZ RUNNER, Northwest Persian
3ft 5in x 13ft 10in
Circa 1900
Clearly a home-crafted runner never intended for sale, the entirely spontaneous artistry of this antique Persian Heriz rug is entirely personal and continually surprising. An abundance of folkloric, abstracted animal motifs, including charming horses, sheep and gazelles are drawn with a joyful freedom of line and scale. Profound asymmetry extends throughout its 19th century village carpet design, most notably in its entirely dissimilar, delightfully freeform diamond medallions. Coveted cobalt blue appears alongside unexpected teal and azure hues, with near-continual abrash color striation adding further richness and depth to this Oriental carpet. (From THE CAROLINA CACHE.)
