HALVAI BIJAR RUNNER, Northwest Persian
3ft 8in x 19ft 0in
3rd Quarter, 19th Century
This antique Persian Halvai Bijar is among the most finely crafted, most sophisticated 19th century runners we have seen. In excellent, heavier pile condition, this stellar antique runner presents a masterfully crafted, classical pattern that brought renown to its weavers whose long formal carpets filled castle passageways throughout Europe for centuries. Its exquisite field pattern, known as the Herati design, achieves a subtle liveliness through an elegant, time-softened palette of colors. The wide main border of this unusually long 18ft runner provides a regal frame displaying the Shah Abbas design first seen in Persian carpets woven in the 16th century.
