Caucasian Marasali Shirvan Prayer Rug
3ft 10in x 4ft 9in
Late 19th Century
A member of the much-prized “Black Marasali Shirvan” style, this ingenious antique rug sets aside the regimented perfection of its counterparts in favor of unending variety and a touch of whimsy. Its great interest lies in the intentional asymmetry of its design. This begins with its intentionally off-center mihrab arch, flanked by a constantly changing diversity of intricately patterned boteh motifs in every possible orientation, with no two exactly alike in size, outline and inner detail. Further evidence of the great inventiveness of its creator is that the trademark botehs of the main border have been transformed into deconstructed bird forms.
