Claremont Rug Company is pleased to present this exquisite new addition to our featured arrivals collection, an elegant and engaging Bakshaish. A rare early example of Bakshaish masterwork, this nearly 170-year-old rug ventures into atypically curvilinear patterning for a rug of this genre, brilliantly juxtaposing aspects of both the Persian geometric and floral weaving traditions. The medallion and spandrals incorporate elements of the graceful and refined Persian City carpets in their outlining, with elegant trefoils extending into the field. The meandering leaf and blossom main border, traditional to Bakshaish rugs, is drawn with unusually graceful lines. Poetic verse in flowing calligraphy fills pillars that frame the medallion. The exceptional use of gradual, yet continual abrash in the field and smaller elements reveal the renowned Bakshaish use of this color shading technique to create visual depth. The freely rendered powder blue flower at the innermost medallion is particularly inspired imagery from this always inventive Bakshaish weaving style. This piece would be a dynamic addition to any connoisseur’s collection.
