We are proud to introduce you to “The Intercontinental Collection”, an extraordinary ensemble of antique carpets gathered by a French family of art connoisseurs over five generations. Consistently awe-inspiring, the over 175 rugs from this collection include a number of the family’s original purchases made as early as the mid-1800’s.
Acquired from the family's 80-year old French matron, the collection had been primarily displayed over the past century in four residences on three continents: a chateau outside Paris, an estate on the Italian Riviera, a villa near Rio de Janeiro and a two-story penthouse in Manhattan. These carpets, circa 1800-1900, are consistently on par with those in the best collections we have acquired over the past decade. Almost all are in unusually good condition at such substantial age.
The great majority of the relatively few 19th century art-level rugs that are still in existence are privately held, making this acquisition event even more important. As The Financial Times recently wrote, "There is hot competition for the finite supply of antique art rugs." (3-19-10)
The family members clearly had knowledgeable, impassioned eyes, and explored all the major styles, with a proclivity for early Laver Kirman and Kermanshah Court carpets, and the best Caucasian tribal rugs. A number of monumental oversize carpets are included. Memorable room sizes abound, along with a vast array of small rugs—an abundance certain to satisfy the need for distinguished home decoration or for collection.
