Claremont Rug Company is pleased to showcase this exquisite new addition to our featured arrivals collection, a beautiful Qashqai Shekarlu. The Qashqai are widely considered most revered of the Southwest Persian weaving groups, and this 140-year-old area-sized rug from the subtribe offers an inimitable style which melds bold, graphic imagery with rich, intensely saturated colors. The Qashqai’s famed joie de vivre shines through vividly in this masterful and creative piece, the skilled weavers utilizing graphic, angular presentation to showcase a singular, highly imaginative scene filled with deeply memorable motifs. Numerous one-of-a-kind animal motifs are the stars of the show, skillfully rendered with crisp, exquisite detail. A grand menagerie of gazelles, horses and birds dominate the rug’s field, while in each of the rug’s four broad corner pieces the weavers the entirely original inclusion of an oversized a golden leopard. The leopards instantly capture the viewer’s attention and interest, particularly in the lower two corners, where the weavers chose to play with scale, depicting playful leopards munching on trees that are smaller than they are! This piece would be a wonderful addition to any collection of antique rugs or tribal art, and would be equally at home displayed on a floor or a wall.
