(High-Collectible)
("Featured in our new print catalog") This 160-year-old tribal rug is a standout from a much-revered style, expressing an original interpretation of this powerful design. The repeated peacock symbol in Akstafa rugs has made them one of the most coveted styles within the Caucasian panoply. In ancient times this particular fowl was associated with the sun and the embodiment of celestial grace; Sufis consider them holy. In this brilliantly envisioned piece, the atmosphere of the peacock’s illuminating presence is the theme. The ray-like tail feathers of the eight grand birds are especially prominent, and these radiating lines are mirrored to striking effect in the medallions’ weathervanes and the main border’s motif. Chromatically, this piece presents a luminous visage with three of the four emblems filled with light tones and, the fourth, a soft salmon, instead of a typical axis of alternating deep red and ivory colorations. To our knowledge, the border suite in this tribal rug is unique, possibly inspired by a much earlier rug that the weaver had privy to. It creates a visually stunning and cohesive framing that the traditional border designs for Akstafas could not have supplied. Supported by a dazzling tertiary symbolic display drawn with constant spontaneity for which Caucasian rugs are beloved, this is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Happily, the pile remains superb in heavier condition that is both pleasingly tactile and ensures the rug’s longevity.
