(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery") This entrancing Caucasian rug was created near the wealthy Azerbaijani seaport of Baku, on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Emblematic of Baku weavings, octagonal medallions are tucked within an elongated lozenge-shaped compartment. A golden band surrounds this space with several sleek, angular weavers’ combs. The esoteric cruciform designs held in each octagon are reminiscent of a Far Eastern aesthetic, a look easily transmitted to such a bustling trade hub. This tremendously adroit weaver, however, adapted and expertly individualized it through their own cultural perspective. Also within the field is a smorgasbord of beloved symbolic ornaments that, in one way or another, are meant to protect and provide good fortune to this rug’s owner. Huge jovial boteh, or “Seeds of Life,” surround the upper medallion, along with elemental daisy florets, latch-hook lanterns, and crowned birds in profile. Beguiling mask-like jewel forms appear in spontaneous clusters wherever the weaver decided to find a space. The vivified field is further sprinkled with glittering ember red, ivory-outlined diamonds for good measure.
