This Bidjov sub-style’s phenomenal visual energy portrays soaring elemental winged forms, brilliantly expressed by a highly imaginative weaver. This tremendously fascinating scene relays a vision of horsemen riding side saddle in native costume along with canine companions. Other esoteric designs in the center column are lantern-like, surrounded by sparkling diamonds, and beguiling cylopean amulets. The indigo field is also rife with a spectacle of apotropaic ornaments designed to imbue this rug with good fortune. Tiny cloudbands signal the approach of a celestial dragon, while tumar talismans and mythical zoomorphic beings stand alert to ward off evil intent. A sonorous chorus of rich and expertly dyed tonalities emphasizes the mysteries evoked by this visual paradigm. The Chi Chi border features an exciting pattern of wonderfully whimsical diagonal bars and exploded versions of geometric rosettes, only to suddenly shift to a ‘crab’ style pattern at the bottom, showing off the admirable daring of an irreverent mid-nineteenth century artist in the precious years before commercialization - a real collector’s gem!
