(Connoisseur-Caliber)
A master weaver's command of this regional style's motifs and penchant for pure saturated color make this Caucasian Bidjov Shirvan a prize find. Its primary Rorshachesque design is a series of hyper-stylized, symbolically charged renderings of ram's horn and Celestial Dragon motifs that harbor effervescent circles, S-glyphs and checkered florets. Amid the assemblage of esoteric symbols, a beguiling saddled horse without a discernible rider reminds us of the visible world. The rug's expertly dyed sonorous chorus of both rich and pale tonalities is mesmerizing in its wideness of palette, emphasizing the mysteries evoked by the age-old motifs. Its main border features an eccentric "leaf and calyx" pattern that borrows forms most often found in the Chi Chi tradition. Aided by a mild patina, the drawing is astoundingly clear, permitting each gracefully proportioned ram's horn, dragon device, and palmette to be individually expressed.
