(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery") With phenomenal graphic energy, this charming 19th-century Caucasian Bidjov Shirvan is filled with an enchanting variety of deeply personal deconstructed reinterpretations of classical Bidjov dragon and sunburst motifs brilliantly expressed by a highly dexterous weaver at the height of her craft. An unusual, evocative palette of rosy sandstone, buoyant azure, dark teal, bright umber, crimson, copper, and ochre, among other exotic tones, is displayed through the accompanying peony flowers and floating blossoms with delight across a brown ebony ground. Close inspection shows the continual nuance in the hues, which lends great visual depth to this painterly composition. This piece is a woven reflection that distills the challenge and splendor of life in this high Caucasian mountain region into a work of art—two elemental borders of equal width frame this natural portrait. The outer band is often seen in rugs from the Kuba region. This gorgeous tribal weaving happily shows that its previous owners considered it precious, as it is still in fantastic high-pile condition.
