(Connoisseur-Caliber)
From the Kazak weaving village of Bordjalou, this boldly elemental Caucasian rug portrays the remarkable vitality and joie de vivre which resulted from the rugged lifestyle of their high mountain valley. It features this sub-style's penchant for latch-hook designs, where "Wheels of Life" shine upon a lambent denim blue field. Although symmetrical and ultimately harmonious in spirit, its creator could not help themselves opting to apply a disciplined freestyle drawing of many motifs to capture an effortless spontaneity. The center and shape are individually treated in the rhythmic mandalas drifting within the field. A parade of sculpted rosettes in the rich firebrick border also expresses the relaxed spirit of asymmetrical artistry for which the best Kazak rugs are prized. Beyond the variation, talismanic cloud band inclusions and geometricized blossoms add to its abstractly totemic feel. It is endowed by the radiant polychromy of a quintessentially high-elevation Caucasian color palette. Through mastery of natural dye-brewing practices and expert color contrasts, including a serene sea green rarely found in Kazak rugs, this piece is a celebration of life and a welcome, thought-provoking diversion from the ordinary sights and tasks of the day.
