(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) The wealthy port city of Baku in Azerbaijan, located on the Absheron peninsula jutting into the Caspian Sea, has been for centuries an entrepot for desirable goods in its bazaars, including the charismatic rugs woven in its hinterland. This one-of-a-kind example combines a highly idiosyncratic pattern language with masterfully rendered natural color tones to create a mesmerizing artistic statement. The hexagonal centerpiece is reminiscent of ancient tribal flatweaves or kilims, featuring a stepped outline that encloses an inner diamond with anchor pendants. The field is replete with colorful geometricized floral forms, each enclosing a gazelle or unique motifs resembling arrow fletching, adorned with a small cross on the underside. These, along with spontaneously drawn totemic designs, including a plethora of miniature cloudbands (representing the Dragon’s enclosing vapors) and other celestial forms, rest upon a glimmering indigo ground highlighted by subtle, intentional color striation. This mat-size gem is an extraordinarily rare, thought-provoking piece exhibiting virtuoso artistic freedom.
