Antique Seichur Kuba rugs are exceptionally fine weavings from the northeastern district of the Caucasus Mountains. Although the St. Andrew’s Cross design is more frequently seen, highly stylized geometric designs rendered in masterfully natural dyed color tones can also be found as in this majestic example. The delicately shaded or abrashed deep indigo ground provides the perfect backdrop for three over-scale sunburst medallions with elaborately serrated edges floating amidst smaller abstracted flowerheads and blossoms in tones of coral, khaki, sapphire blue, and golden ochre. The primary central medallion is based in variegated jade green and encloses small blossoms and an elongated innermost centerpiece. It is accompanied
above and below by a similar pair based in ruby red. Delicate branches ending in colorful trefoil leaves emerge from the edges of the spacious field. The ivory primary border is adorned with the striking “eagle’s head” or "ocean wave" design, an ancient-looking pattern that features a very powerful and tightly drawn interlocking reciprocal motif.
