(High-Collectible) Renowned for their distinctive style, the finest art-level 19th century Chi Chi rugs are seldom encountered and avidly sought after by collectors for their signature mosaic-like field pattern and prismatic rosette and diagonal bar border design. This arresting example proudly demonstrates the exuberant artistic freedom of the Caucasian lowland weaving tradition. Set in deeply saturated indigo, this strongly collectible tribal rug's reserve is thronged with an assemblage of cruciform motifs, with octagonal and pinwheel rosettes accompanied by ornaments that look like polychrome dice. Tiny chains of diamonds and S-shaped celestial dragon signs achieve a sparkling effect in the background. A bold horizontal red stripe of St. Andrew's crosses forms is highly unusual to see and marks this piece out for a totally original pattern. Rich jewel hues of azure, ivory, crimson, maize yellow, Tyrian purple, and teak brown, with stunning shades of olive and jungle green, all set this lowland tribal rug ablaze with delightful color. Chi Chi is among the most finely knotted Caucasian weavings, allowing every visual element in the teeming field to shimmer with great clarity. Fantastic quality wool has ensured that this piece remains in extremely good condition at 175 years of age.
