(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The bold geometry and heavy pile of this Fachralo Kazak reflect the hardy stamina needed to survive and prosper in the rugged high-mountain villages where this rug was woven 150 years ago. Enormous stepped-diamond medallions form an axis in the field, each crafted with multilayered complexity and made more enchanting by a drawing style that shows constant change and continual improvisation. The spaciousness of the midnight-indigo background amplifies the hypnotic power of the medallions. The field is filled with a harmonious arrangement of crystalline motifs that balances symmetrical and asymmetrical beauty. These tribal motifs were of historic importance to the 19th-century Kazak weavers and include Stars of Wisdom, Diamonds of Strength, Ram’s horns, dragons, and the Seed of Life, also known as the boteh. The masterful use of abrash throughout the ground and within some of the medallions makes the colors far more interesting and culminates in a mighty crescendo at the top, as daylight and renewed hope seem to emerge from the midnight blue of the night. The classical Shah Abbas border design of complex palmettes and meandering vines is rendered here with powerful geometric simplicity and drama, and made even more enthralling by the dazzling palette of continually changing colors that each lightning-bolt-like leaf explores.
