This antiquarian Shirvan is a visual dynamo with time-honored tribal designs that run the symbolic gamut. In standout earlier pieces such as this, a multiplicity of motifs in deftly differing scales provide the energetic backdrop to a powerful tetrad. Two faceted prismatic hexagon medallions extend into serrated fan palmette pendants in softened vermilion. These contain evocative, symbolic assemblages like avant-garde Calderesque mobiles. The almost cosmological assortment of tribal designs that populate the Caspian blue field are arranged in a slight asymmetry, creating a subliminal sense of movement that breathes life into the composition. Don’t miss the two surrealistic human figures found near the bottom edge in flounced skirts that could be considered an artist’s signature. An amazingly fine weave and incredibly silky wool illumined by a mature patina and an idiosyncratic “dragon” border, bounded by two glittering Greek key bands, add continual visual interest. its overall exemplary craftsmanship exponentially enhances this rug’s substantial collectible value.
