(High-Collectible)
This virtually 140-year-old Caucasian Shirvan rug reveals a dazzling interplay of color and design and the irrepressible impulse of a weaver challenging herself with innovative stylistic choices. The Gubpa center axis is shortened by highly overscale serrated end pendants that are usually found in a more rectangular shape. A mind-boggling level of intense patterning and saturated color fill the field, and both the "borrowed" Chi Chi inner border and the outer dragon one with its delightful nested horses in the corners. Every element is rendered with crystal clarity, even the tiny animals scattered across the midnight indigo blue field. Extraordinarily rhythmic "ocean wave" borders are used no less than three times, each in a different color: this motif is much more difficult to execute than the more typical crenelated design seen in Shirvan rugs.
