(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) Karabagh rugs are wonderfully distinctive weavings from the southwestern Caucasus Mountains. They are related to the preeminent carpets from the town of Kazak and share similar characteristics of design, construction, and point of origin, not to mention a rich and lavish history. Yet despite their similarities, rugs from the Karabagh province have developed their unique style that sets them apart from others. A dream for the connoisseur of singular artworks, this 175-year-old piece is highly original in both its unique color palette and dramatic composition. The design is compelling in its veritable display of contemporary-looking geometry highlighted by eye-catching natural dyes. Intersecting polygons form diagonal bands, filled with finely etched motifs in tones of ruby red, sapphire, and saffron. Enclosing striking angular flower heads, the indigo bands are also creating a segmented vertical display. A pair of rich red diagonal bands stands apart from the composition, each featuring broad, geometricized flower heads and angular leaves. The weaver has captured a significant amount of visual depth in this highly idiosyncratic design.
