Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This incredibly evocative antique Caucasian runner features a succession of hexagonal medallions, in rhythmic order down the central axis, bookended by exuberant fan palmettes. They lead the way like illuminated stepping stones along a pathway filled with totemic symbols and ultra-stylized floral forms, as only prior generations of Caucasian tribal weavers knew how. Curious bird forms and animals join indigenously costumed people with myriad chessboards, diamonds, and latch-hook emblems to animate the luminous royal blue field, in naturally dyed shades of maize, brass, celadon, cinnabar, ivory, and gold. Its color palette offers a remarkable range of time-softened, vegetally dyed colors in purposeful shifting shades to enliven the wonderful menagerie of elemental imagery. The finely etched borders, featuring Far Eastern-inspired knotted rosettes, float unencumbered in the effulgent carnelian main border, accentuating the elegance of this piece. In remarkable, heavy pile condition, this piece is a visual delight that would add tremendous refinement and visual impact to a distinguished hallway.
