(Connoisseur-Caliber)
This lovely example of the seldom encountered Khila Baku subgroup was woven in the lowlands district of Baku on the Caspian Sea a generation before the turn of the 19th century. They are best known for their patterns formed almost exclusively of boteh ("Seed of Life") motifs, an archetypal symbol for growth, both outwardly and inwardly. A pair of resplendent golden medallions display pinwheel blossom-laden devices like fantastical mobiles, making a dynamic impression upon the richly dyed indigo field. Distinctive segmented boteh forms enclose smaller versions in a charming double boteh invention in ivory and rich madder red. Don't miss the cleverly rendered birds hidden in plain sight. Can you find them all? Stately, naturally dyed hues ensure this exceptional antique Caucasian rug would be right at home with almost any type of home decor. Fascinating, unexpected, gentle abrash color shifts appear throughout, producing a low contrast fluctuation of colors that invigorates this piece as can only be found in rugs woven before the onset of the commercial era. A series of traditional Caucasian border designs in complementary hues complete this impressive composition.
