(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery") This stunningly elemental Caucasian Lambalo Kazak communicates across more than a century the vivacity and dazzling simplicity that its weaver while sitting at her loom intended. Quartets of latch-hooked Memling gul medallions are positioned above and below the decagonal centerpiece. The clear ivory ground of the mandala houses a menagerie of geometrically abstract animals. The luminous sapphire field teems with solar disc forms, Diamonds of Strength, and fancily cockaded miniature birds. Sensitive abrash color shifting appears throughout the field and borders, adding a glowing effect to this piece’s striking Kazak hues and considerable movement and depth to this powerful composition. Its border suite is an unusual combination that sees reciprocal triangular talismans, stencil-like daisies, and a primary band with esoteric symbols reminiscent of some ancient language system. Although little remains of this region’s woven legacy, a wonderfully preserved heavy-piled rug such as this speaks volumes for the grandeur of the Lambalo sub-style through its radiant artistry. This piece has very little sign of wear, so we know it has been kept as an art treasure over the generations.
