(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") A jewel of 19th-century tribal weaving, this mesmerizing Caucasian rug from the realm of the Lesghistan evokes a sense of age-old wisdom, supported by a shimmering patina. Its flashy quartet of individualistic namesake stars makes for a striking central focus on the indigo ground. Ivory rosettes between the stars amplify the polychrome versions enclosed in octagons at each stellar center, forming a powerful axis. These and some of the tinier symbols appear to be in motion, all whirling together at the same speed. This piece's totemic, overall effect is deepened by a luminous palette of rich shades that, adding superb contrast and dimensionality, are enhanced by subtle abrash color fluxes. The dazzling Kufic main border pattern, thought to have origins in the Far East, is augmented on either side by minor bands of dancing carnations. Eye-catching on the wall or in a quiet place on the floor, this rug would be a daily visual treat for a lucky connoisseur.
