(Connoisseur-Caliber)
This exceedingly finely woven tribal rug from the lowland regions of the Caucasus Mountains exemplifies the exquisite textiles this region produced, especially in the first three quarters of the 19th century. With the soft and pliable handle sought out by collectors, this well-preserved, over one-and-on-half-centuries-old rug is a gem, offering a shimmering patina and a splendid range of color. Although small in size, it presents masterful handling of myriad symbols that through scaling and fascinating color combinations creates an evocative visual display of this region’s signature patterning. The unimaginable weaving skill reflected here is most easily appreciated through the precision and clarity of the multiple borders where differing rhythms and complexities were built horizontally row by row.
