(Connoisseur-Caliber)
This 145-year-old, strongly collectible piece presents a remarkable level of refinement and artistic sensitivity that is synonymous with Shirvan tribal artistry. The honeycomb field format is thought to have arisen in the northern portion of the vast Shirvan province and was a popular patterning among weavers of the 18th century. From our review of many examples of this design, it seems the filling of the always golden honeycomb is not traditional, leaving those choices to each weaver. Here, individual rows create a horizontal emphasis through their shared motifs, creating a parade of charming flowers and shrubs, expressed in early tones of salmon, terracotta, marine blue, and softened jade and fern greens. The dragon-like “S” motif in the main border evokes the celestial protection of earthly delicacy.
