(Connoisseur-Caliber)
With a seemingly effortless ability to harmonize myriad designs and colors, this “long rug” from the Caucasian region bordering the Caspian Sea reflects the virtuosity that makes the best Shirvan rugs so admired. In this fabulous hand-crafted tribal piece, four foundational jewel medallions in gold and indigo are bedecked with quartered disks, amulets, and latch hook forms encased by rufous red and sea green checker pattern. A compelling mosaic effect is elaborated in a masterful range of powerful, vegetal-dyed hues creating razor-sharp contrasts of exciting, intense impact. Throughout, diverse color juxtapositions and gentle adjustments of hue known as abrash maintain subliminal visual interest. The beguiling oversized reciprocal crenellations of the primary band are also ascribed with halberd and arrow motifs, perhaps for added security to the elaborate “fence.” This piece retains qnotably good pile at over 150 years of age.
