(Connoisseur-Caliber)
Crafted in tribally settled Shirvan near the Caspian Sea, this striking piece in remarkable heavier pile condition offers time-honored Caucasian artistry and color craft. The rippled denim ground supports two beauteous jewel medallions that dominate the center, more often found in threes. Unusual colorful rectangles reminiscent of naval ensigns are stacked around each radiant centerpiece and flank both serrated pendants. Each holds a curious emblem that could be imagined as architecture or an esoteric puzzle device. Robust slow-dyed hues sourced from plants gathered locally yield an alchemy of tones from Burmese ruby and dandelion to beryl green and sparingly employed camel tones not often found in Shirvan rugs. As you follow the clear ivory border around the field, you will find evidence of the weaver's spontaneity in the whimsically drawn leaf and calyx pattern, accompanied by the irregular placement of triangular talismans.
