("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") Local weaving tradition in the region of Shirvan excelled in exploring the numerous possible variations using a limited palette of color to maximum effect. This superbly crafted piece is closely related to the Shirvan subgroup style known as “Gubpa” displaying four vertically aligned stepped medallions, bookended by a long horizontal madder red band at each end of the field. Each stepped medallion encloses finely rendered hooked mandalas or “Wheels of Life” in tones of madder, cornflower blue, and camelhair brown. These primary devices are ensconced by a multitude of smaller totemic motifs including peacocks, legendary gazelle, weaver’s combs, and minuscule “S” designs, all resting upon a deep indigo ground. A row of small colorful blossoms edge the perimeter of the field.
