(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This compelling Caucasian rug bears witness to the archetypal origins of this highly prized substyle. Its artistic maturity is evident in subtle asymmetry and the exacting clarity of its beautifully drawn symbols. Three pairs of evocative ram’s horns encircle abstracted sunbursts, while diverse, regional patterns are sprinkled with a relaxed spaciousness on a vivid red ground. The palette is brilliantly diversified by a wide spectrum of luminous, buoyant hues, including teal, saffron, hints of mocha via camelhair accents, and highly prized Tyrian purple, which, in this case, is the gorgeous color of Bordeaux wine. The artist improvised unusual twists on the classic chalice and oak leaf graphics in both the vertical and lower ivory borders. Avid connoisseurs of antique Caucasian rugs love to see this sort of playfulness and whimsy. This striking piece happily remains in very good pile condition, especially considering its one-and-a-half centuries of age.
