(High-Collectible)
("Great Lakes Collection") This exciting, more than 150-year-old Caucasian Shirvan bears witness to the archetypal origins of the prized Bidjov sub-style. The field color is a seldom-seen vivid red as opposed to the traditional indigo background of the extant majority. Its visual program is exceptionally clear and filled with astoundingly rich, entirely harmonious colors, including golden saffron, aquamarine, crimson, ivory, and sparingly used Tyrian purple, originating with enterprising seafaring Phoenician traders to become the color of Roman emperors. Every hue perfectly expresses these vigorous, abstract motifs. Like the metronome of an inspired musician, its vertical axis is used as a guide for an exquisitely balanced arrangement of classic ram's horn motifs and abstract radiant sunburst "medallions." In this seamlessly organized setting, each Shirvan rosette within the inner perimeter is in the form of an endless knot that falls into its natural place, an outcome far different than the more disordered, irregular placement seen in many lesser examples. The resolved, puzzle piece elemental "perching bird" border is rendered with draftsman-like skill. At substantial age, its condition is superb, with primarily heavy pile.
