(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") This tremendously rare outlier was woven on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, north of Baku, in a region influenced by many neighboring weaving traditions, such as those of Kuba and Daghestan proper. However, much earlier pieces such as this hold a bold Derbend style all their own. This vibrant, long area-size rug was created as a family piece with one of its members, or the weaver themselves, depicted in the lower-left corner of the field. Along with several errant animals, all are dwarfed by a forest of surreal flowering trees that make up the allover pattern. Each holds a trio of billowy blooms that stand out like brilliant flashbulbs against the saturated crimson background. Its borders are minimalist and visually compelling, with cobalt blue minor bands containing diagonally oriented bars and ‘W’ motifs representing amulets for protective magic. An ivory main border features almost figural blossoms on parade. Created as a family piece, this strongly collectible Caucasian artifact is a delightful hidden treasure to behold.
