(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Woven in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains in the small village of Chondzoresk this totally engrossing weaving is not only visually attractive but charged with tribal symbolism of the ages. The recognizable and inscrutable motifs within the composition combine to create a window into the still vital, totemically rooted tribal mindset of that time. Cloudbands of all shapes and sizes, thought to represent the vapor of the Celestial Dragon, inhabit two shield medallions that also host hieroglyphic birds and two-headed quadrupeds. Above and below each are more fantastical avian and mammalian friends brought into order by two shamanic figures in ebony and ivory. A riotous color palette is showcased, especially in the flashy cruciform rosette and amulet border that abruptly and purposely changes style a third of the way up. Fiery vermillion, cobalt, coral, emerald green, burnished gold, and bright blue are among the expressive hues found within. Not only did this exceptionally rare collector's gem defy the odds of survival after some 140 years, it still possesses luxuriant heavy pile!
