(High-Collectible) Arguably the most renowned of antique Caucasian styles, the memorable "Eagle Kazak" rug was highly sought after by tribal collectors, encouraging small Karabagh workshops connected with foreign markets to produce by 1900-1920 significant numbers of them. Earlier pieces, such as this magnificent rug, have a nuanced fluidity and graceful power that cannot be duplicated. The "Double Eagle" format is particularly prized and rare, especially when four-legged creatures are included. Here, a pair of large, masterfully drawn medallions, each with a dozen ivory feather-shaped extensions, commands the crimson field that is streaked and dappled with Spanish carmine. In this consummate piece, it is easy to appreciate the slightly different positions of the great birds' outstretched wings as they ascend.
