In this majestic example, a potent carnelian field glowing with a deep patina holds two differently shaped ivory medallions with smaller decagons of rouge tone at the center. Silhouetting the enigmatic motifs, the predominance of this aged color on the sparsely adorned field is electrifying, as is the radiant sapphire oak-leaf-and-arrows border. The hand-drawn quality across every inch of this piece, the dexterous use of unequal spacing, and the six never-before-seen square motifs in the field all point to a connection with the artistic freedom alive in the 1st half of the 19th century to which this circa 1850 rug was the direct successor.
