Woven in the higher elevations of the Caucasus range over 130 years ago, this unique rug is a testament to the vibrancy of the tribal aesthetic still alive at the end of the 19th century. Offering an original composition featuring five "Wheels of Life"--a particularly beloved symbol among the mountain weavers--it entertains with numerous spontaneous and abrupt deconstructions of the secondary elements, possibly conveying the message that life is full of little surprises. The handling of the square medallion with its inaccuracies is equally charming. Enjoy the parade of rosette forms alternating in scarlet, royal blue, and emerald green in the ivory surround, for example. Stars, "chessboards," and diamonds float outside the centerpiece while within the four Wheel emblems on their teal green grounds, the weaver has created an original design, plucked and reconfigured from the tribal symbology. Rugs from the village of Gendje are known for diagonal field patterns. Here, demonstrating an admirable degree of dexterity, a "barberpole" template for the main border reflects the Gendje attraction to slanting slopes, not unlike the view of layered peaks that surrounded them. Happily, this thrilling piece remains in outstanding condition with heavy pile.
