(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) Woven in the high mountains for centuries, Caucasian Kazak weavings are unabashedly bold and colorful. Unique to Kazaks, the abstract ‘pinwheel' motif is perhaps the most elusive of all Caucasian designs, and it is particularly unusual to find it displayed in a prayer rug. This symbol has long stumped rug scholars with its ancient, powerful, and compelling symbolic language, which waits silently for us to receive the wisdom in its message. Here, two luminous cobalt polygons incorporate the esoteric coiled appendages; the lower one displays three, while the upper features five beneath a floating, bejeweled prayer arch. The fiery carnelian field also features four ivory bands, a pair of eight-pointed 'Stars of Wisdom,' smaller totemic motifs, and a single numeric cartouche placed within the niche of the prayer arch. The motifs used in the border suite are very rarely found, if not original creations to this rug, where the number of curious inclusions in the ivory main border increase from the bottom to the top.
