(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") This venerable tribal weaving of great age displays an eye-pleasing spontaneous, and spacious layout. However, its primitive simplicity hides deft artistic accomplishments. Obviously, a seasoned weaver brought her skills to bear in both the use of luminous natural dyes and adroit design presentation. These early masterpieces exhibit a range of spirited inventiveness in contrast to many later examples, which became static and uninspired. The field features two primary vertical rows, each with five colorful shield medallions in tones of jade green, azure, alabaster, and deep walnut. Each medallion encloses a highly stylized “Tree of Life” motif. Numerous smaller octagons, eight-pointed stars, and an array of totemic symbols all rest amidst the primary rows, all on a time-softened madder red ground. A single narrow serrated inner border edges the perimeter of the field. The border suite relies on an ancient design rendering that utilizes a reciprocal or interlocking format. The main border displays a series of “fleur-de-lis”-like motifs in alabaster and deep walnut. On close analysis, these stylized floral patterns and their associated colors alternate between being in the foreground and then receding to become the background color tone. This artistic arrangement is also seen in the flanking secondary borders, which are based in madder red and cobalt blue.
