(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This intuitively conceived Caucasian Lesghi, with its rainbow's array of inventively combined hues and delightfully esoteric symbols, illustrates an aesthetically unique cultural package distilled over the generations in a woven work of art. A panoply of coveted collector attributes is present in this intensely creative 19th-century piece at once profoundly archetypal and strikingly modern. It is emblazoned by three full and a partial fourth pixellated "Star of Wisdom" motifs, the beloved emblem of the Lesghi people. The bottom star is vertically expansive, seeming to apply pressure to the others, which are slightly compressed. The topmost appears to be slowly being pushed out of the field, giving the design an ingenious sense of movement. A multiplicity of small tribal devices fill the margins of the reserve and are interspersed in the recesses between medallions. Whimsy continues in the border suite, giving the viewer hours of discovery. Throughout, the time-mellowed colors are exquisite and glow through a gentle one-of-a-kind patina achieved through mountain wool pile. As a cherished artwork, it is in remarkable condition after nearly a century and a half.
