Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) This rug with its intriguing, rustic rendition of the pattern known as “Blossom Shirvan” appeared on the cover of Jan David Winitz’s “The Guide to Purchasing An Oriental Rug” (pub. 1985). Classical examples of this design typically feature a smaller, denser rendition of this pattern. This clearly more tribal weaving fills the pattern with designs twice the size of the town examples, expressing an irresistible joie d’vivre. At this scale the three-dimensional structure created by brilliant ivory almond blossoms set against the deeply saturated vermillion red field and dark blue border is celebrative in effect.
