SHIRVAN, Southeast Caucasian

127 x 198cm
3rd Quarter, 19th Century
(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") Clearly the work of an expert, highly impassioned weaver, this one-in-the-world Shirvan demonstrates an unusual level of exactitude and cohesion for a tribal rug, at the same time demonstrating a great facility to capture the individual spirit and limitless variations employed by weavers from this region in the 19th century. A sawtoothed lattice divides the sunset red field into small compartments where various unique emblems glow from within. Diamonds with double hourglass designs, floret clusters, and latch hook devices with ivory bottony crosses fluctuate in color and position in this matrix. Filled with apotropaic enchantment, numerous spontaneous motifs are charms to ward away misfortune and have the added benefit of ensuring that the eye never grows bored. Double combs, triangular tumar talismans, and crested birds are spontaneously placed along with shamanic human and animal figures. Heavier pile further enhances its overall charm to the Caucasian rug collector.
