With significant artistic magnitude and superb craftsmanship, this memorable 4x5 tribal rug emerges from a small group of what are known as Shirvan "Bird Rugs". On the shimmering ivory field, the avian design follows the mid-19th century formatting seen in several other published examples, where enlarged, highly symbolized bird form take on a mythical quality, towering over the traditional split palmettes, charming scrub and tree motifs, and various iterations of the Zoroastrian “S’ symbol. Its floating field motifs are intriguingly archetypal, drawn with profoundly organic contours. A complex, intricately rendered Kufic main border, with equally fluid renderings frames the memorable composition.
