(Connoisseur-Caliber)
This extremely rare, nearly 170-year-old piece is an archetypical example of the prized, very seldom-found ‘Bird’ Shirvan motif, here appearing on a shimmering parchment ground in hues of antique carnelian and midnight indigo. The rug’s spaciousness, presence of rosettes, and sprinkled tiny icons all point to an early date. A trove of magically time-softened tones is omnipresent, including sky and lapis blue, amber, pale rose, fern, sea green, and treasured Tyrian purple. The unusual main border accomplishes turning at each corner in a novel way, reflecting fearless confidence in the spontaneous solution. Of interest to aficionados is that it is the only Bird Shirvan we have encountered that does not include a series of split palmettes in the field and features a diagonal stripe main border.
