The Caucasian tribes peoples have taken the pattern language of more sophisticated antique rug weaving cultures and transformed these designs into simple geometrical proportions bringing a new freshness and spontaneity. It is not clear where the “Keyhole” design emanated from, nor why this evocative piece has a single aperture when most weavings typically are doubled. This particular version consists of a rectangle that culminates in a geometric dome at the lower end. The centerpiece, enclosing three colorful polygons, is edged by a striking ivory border with serrated leaves and a finely etched date translating to 1843 (most likely commemorating a special occasion). Polychromatic stepped medallions surround the primary motif, along with an array of smaller animals, a pair of whimsical ivory camels, and numerous geometricized blossoms all resting upon a skillfully striated undyed camelhair ground.
