Originating in the lowland area of the Caucasus Mountains near the Caspian Sea that harbored a wealth of weaving styles, this piece is more complex and more finely knotted than those of the highland tribes. Mesmerizing groupings of whimsical abstract tribal devices elicit a sense of energetic movement in the field, intensified by subtle asymmetries in their alignment and placement. Numerous tertiary ornaments sparkle across the surface, including a dozen human figures with arms outstretched in colorful indigenous costumes. Enhanced by the subtle patina of age, an unexpectedly robust palette of ember red, emerald, pale rose, buoyant azure, and persimmon achieves a tremendous visual impact animating every imaginative motif with a luminescent glow.
