(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery") 19th century Caucasian Gendje tribal rugs are well known for their precision and playfulness, two traits that equal proven aesthetic success among antique Caucasian rugs. This piece has the feeling of a young, quite gifted weaver who dared to break out of the box. This is especially notable in the morning glory blue border, where this budding non-conformist uses “Wheel of Life” mandalas instead of the classical rosette theme. Their ever-so-slight offset placement imbues the pattern with a subtle sense of movement. The pleasing rhythm of the diagonally striped field is an accomplished presentation with excellent spacing whereas lesser Gendjes can feel somewhat tight and constricted. In this innovative version, spritely sprigs pop up and ride waves of abrash color shifting that occur in the fern green bands in exquisite contrast to the solid ivory bands. She was obviously a color maestra with a Matisse-like penchant for bold chromatic combining that just works from any angle one approaches this joyful, upbeat tribal work of art. Even the minor crenellated borders flash through umpteen gradients of hue. Fantastic heavier pile makes it as useful as it is fun and visually delightful.
