KUBA CAMELHAIR, Northeast Caucasian
3' 2" x 5' 4"
Late 19th Century
(High-Decorative) This extraordinarily inventive Caucasian Kuba offers a very high-spirited expression of the much revered boteh (“seed of life”) pattern. The novel arrangement of the borders is fascinating: here, the outer border is the widest, creating a cascade of narrower minor bands that draws the viewer’s eye to the rug center in a very compelling way. This unusual and successful effect is accompanied by bold shifts of blue combined with subtly irregular placement of the rows of boteh, all contributing to an urgent sense of compositional movement. Especially potent turquoise hues often adjoin richly saturated and warm red tones: this juxtaposition of neighboring tones on the color wheel creates a very dynamic and exciting tension, revealing consummate artistic mastery.
