(Connoisseur-Caliber)
The lowland area of the Caucasus Mountains near the Caspian Sea harbored a wealth of weaving styles, much more complex than the larger knotted, totemic carpets of the highland tribes. Set alight by its saffron yellow field, this superbly crafted Caucasian Kuba rug possesses a dynamic, celebrative presence where faceted lotus blossoms appear to descend in a shower. Their varied scale and diamond ornaments elicit a sense of advancing and receding into the background. The Kufic pattern in the steely blue main border is drawn with masterful precision in the expanding horizontal bands and compression in the vertical. It immediately adds tremendous visual interest as a spacious frame to the closely packed interior motifs. Undulating minor bands further show the admirable dexterity of a highly accomplished weaver. Its condition is extremely good, with heavier pile graced by a slight patina that clarifies each motif.
